Stay Cool and In Control

Diabetes care in hot weather

Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, but if you’re managing diabetes, high temperatures can affect your blood sugar levels and how your body responds to insulin. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe in the sun.

  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine, alcohol, or high sugar content, as they can lead to dehydration.
  • Protect medications. Store insulin and other supplies in a cool place. Never leave them in a hot car or in direct sunlight.
  • Monitor blood sugar levels. Check your blood sugar more frequently, especially if you’re active or spending time outdoors.
  • Be prepared. Carry snacks, glucose tablets, and plenty of water when you’re out and about.
